We are proud to celebrate our supporter, Cllr Dr. Tony Vickers (Hungerford & Kintbury Ward) , who was elected as Chairman of West Berkshire Council 2025/2026 .

Cllr Dr Tony Vickers has chosen Good Hope Farm as his community project and has spoken warmly about our mission:

"Good Hope Farm implies some of those who are 'left behind.' It allows young adults with special needs – who we call 'Farmers' – and their carers to enjoy the outside, doing supervised, simple work. Everyone can contribute to society in their own way – even if it is by giving the joy of volunteering opportunities to others."

PRESENTATION BY GOOD HOPE FARM

We recently had the valuable opportunity to deliver a brief presentation at the West Berkshire Learning Disability Partnership Board meeting, held at Broadway House in Newbury. During our presentation, we spoke about the grant we received earlier this year from the West Berkshire Learning Disability Partnership Board, which funded a new battery-powered generator.

We shared how this equipment has had a significant and positive impact on our service users. The generator has greatly improved the day-to-day experiences of our diverse group, helping us to create a more inclusive, safe, and supportive environment for everyone.

Planting Day!

Our planting day was Saturday 20th January

Thanks to a donation of 200 trees from The Tree Council's Branching Out Fund , we have been able to replenish our hedge which is critical for wind break and wildlife.

We are very grateful for this donation.

Our planting day was Saturday 20th January – a “root” day according to the almanac.

The weather was slightly warmer so it was easier to dig as in the previous weeks.

All the volunteers who came for the day did wonderful work and all the trees were planted on the day – job done !��

We had all ages ranging from 7 to 73 years old and everyone contributed!

We are very proud of you all !

Good Hope Farm gets up and running

They have had to contend with inclement weather, difficult ground, foraging deer and rabbits, and three burglaries but Karine, her son Alex and the farm team of staff and volunteers have despatched one problem after another, and are looking forward to a busy summer at Good Hope Farm on Park Lane.

Some two acres of former Elm Farm pasture are being planted with flowers, fruit and vegetables, alongside the newly established orchard of apple, pear and plum trees. The deer and rabbits have been excluded with better fencing, and security has been beefed up to deter human raiders. All equipment is now safely stowed in a container, and a security firm has been hired to keep an eye on the site, which is manned on a mostly daily basis.

Good Hope Farm is now registered with WBC as a service provider for adults with learning difficulties and is beginning to get referrals from local colleges and special schools. With a walk-in polytunnel financed through the Good Exchange (Greenham Trust), a wooden office building and two accessible compostable toilets, Good Hope Farm is already hosting some of the clientele for which it was conceived. The emphasis, says Karine, is on offering practical work experience which optimises individual talents and capabilities. Clients benefit from working in the fresh air of the countryside, and they can obtain a sense of genuine achievement working productively with nature.

Local businesses have found Good Hope Farm to be a good project for their charitable initiatives, offering staff volunteer teams. The polytunnel’s sturdy wooden workbenches, one specifically designed for wheelchair users, were built by one such team. Other volunteers are going to build a fruit cage.

Karine is also grateful for any donations of garden tools, barrows and watering cans.

Planning permission has recently been obtained for improving the entrance driveway and creating a car park area, but this may have to wait for further funding.

Meanwhile, Good Hope Farm is opening to the public from 10am to 3pm on Thursday 16 ^th March. Visitors are asked to come on the hour in order to join guided tours, and bookings can be made via info@goodhopefarm.org.uk . Parking, refreshments and accessible toilets will be available.

Spectrum is a monthly community magazine serving East Woodhay and Woolton Hill. Good Hope Farm was recently featured in their December edition.

This small organic farm is dedicated in the interest of the community and specifically benefiting Adults with Learning Difficulties. Set in beautiful open countryside in Hamstead Marshall, Good Hope Farm operates as a day Centre offering meaningful activities and work experience in a nurturing environment for adults with special needs. The activities build confidence and promote well- being, sustaining and connecting with the natural world.

Karine Giannamore is the founding Director and a passionate advocate of supporting adults with learning difficulties, optimising both physical and mental wellbeing in the outdoors. “When the project was started two years ago, there was nothing but a bare field. We have worked very hard since then to put together a safe, beautiful, and welcoming garden. We have restored a shed which has become our office and a place to sit and have tea, have installed a polytunnel, made a fence, created beds, planted many trees and planted so many flowers. The local community have been incredible with their support.

Recently officially registered as a Community Project with the social services from West Berkshire, qualifying vulnerable adults can now be referred. This is a huge achievement for us.”

A Service Provider for People with Learning Disabilities, Good Hope Farm provides support and meaningful occupation to some of the most isolated members of our community. Many young adults need a place of purposeful activity post school or college and those are sometimes challenging to find once the Education Plan stops. With the right support, most people with a learning disability can lead independent lives at home and can be a real added value in the work environment.

Our farmers take part in horticultural activities, cultivating organically seasonal vegetables, fruit and flowers in order to sell the produce on site and local markets. They learn about healthy food and the rhythm of the seasons. Working in small, supported groups engaging in activities that benefit their well-being and their physical health, enabling them to build and strengthen practical and vocational skills.

Next steps include improving the accessibility to the site for wheelchair users, create suitable paths especially safe drop off and parking facilities for staff and emergency services. Getting stuck in the mud is not an option! Good Hope Farm are fortunate to have a fundraising platform through The Good Exchange.

The farm is beginning to take shape!

Safety is paramount when working with people with Special Needs.

They need to feel comfortable and need to have greater understanding of their surrounding. We have to make sure, as a facilitator, that they feel safe and secure while learning and

enjoying a new experience.

The new fence around the plantation area will be providing a sense of containment and

safety. The fence, being a net, is see-through, designed so we can see the field and nature around.

We worked really hard on this! We used a manual bumper at first to put the fence posts in the ground. It was laborious work! But luckily, we later managed to get the machines to finish it off! We did the fencing nets ourselves though.

We are new at doing anything like this but I think you will be surprised by the result! It looks

good. We will be using palettes for the gates and now we have an official pedestrian

entrance. The farm is beginning to take shape!

Additional bonus: the fence will stop deer thinking the farm is an open buffet!

Tree Planting Continues!

It was a year ago exactly that our adventure started – January 2020.

As soon as we were able to, in February 2020, we planted 1100 beech trees to create our hedge and boundary.

In November 2020, The Woodland Trust generously donated 420 trees to create a wind break and add some more to the hedge. We added those over November and December.

Last week, we have finally started planting fruits in the actual planting area. We have chosen a mix of 40 trees and bushes: pear Concorde, Merton Pride, dwarf tree “petite poire”, Apples trees (James Grieve, Discovery, Sunset, Kidd’s, Laxton’s Superb). We have planted lots of plums too: Damson and some lovely Mirabelles – those little yellow plums that are so delicious and fruit at the end of the summer. We have raspberries coming next week.

At last, we have decided to be a bit more ambitious and have chosen peaches, apricots , nectarines, and even kiwi!

We can’t wait for Summer !!

National Tree Planting Week

The Week of 28 ^th of November – 6 ^th December 2020 was National Tree Planting Week!!

Thanks to the generous donation from the The Woodland Trust giving us a mix of local tree species (Oaks, Rowans, Silver Birch, Hawthorns, Blackthorns), we were able to create an effective wind break on our land. This was needed to protect our vegetables, fruits and flowers planting area as the area is quite exposed and windy.

We had helping hands from volunteers who came over to support us (of course we followed covid safe government guideline and followed social distancing rules. It was easy as we were out in the open field).

It was a great success.

We enjoyed the entire process of planning, learning about landscape management, sequencing and planting the trees perfectly.

Preparation is key for a smooth day.

We invested lots of time to prepare despite having limited resources, but we took it as a challenge and achieved what we had planned. We planted each tree with care, protected each with appropriate tree guards to protect them against the wind but also deer’s and rabbits.

We used woollen pads around the trees to stop weeds growing (provided by the company Chimney Sweep) as we are not using any pesticides since this is organic land!

It was a great work experience for our young adults with learning disabilities who came out to help. It was truly satisfying to watch them thriving in this natural environment and connecting with the project and nature .

It was fascinating to witness their involvement in the whole process and their focused engagement in pre-planned activities.

We are proud of our achievement.

We are so grateful to have found the perfect field and the perfect location.

We are creating a safe, therapeutic and nurturing farm for people with learning disabilities.

We are changing the perception on disability.

People with Learning disabilities often have and give great joy.

Their presence in our life can be so enriching, fulfilling and authentic.

Time is present, full of laughter and humour.

We want to give back by offering them a sense of purpose and pride in their achievements and every day life, by enjoying wo rking in nature on a farm .

Everybody needs a purpose.

We all have a role to play.

The new season is a great reason to make and keep resolutions. Whether it’s eating right or cleaning out the garage, here are some tips for making and keeping resolutions.

Make a list

Lists are great ways to stay on track. Write down some big things you want to accomplish and some smaller things, too.

Check the list regularly

Don’t forget to check in and see how you’re doing. Just because you don’t achieve the big goals right away doesn’t mean you’re not making progress.

Reward yourself

When you succeed in achieving a goal, be it a big one or a small one, make sure to pat yourself on the back.

Think positively

Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did.
